About
What this is
If art is a transmission of a feeling across the shared collective experience between two brains, and if a machine without soul roleplays one end of the tin can, then whispering into the machine is akin to leering into the latent mirror: a delayed, distorted, destructive fragment of your psyche echoing back at you, throwing you off balance, off-kilter. Guard yourself, or you might suffer a trip over the guardrails of a comfortably, perfectly adequate reality — safe yet small…
Latent Mirror is a digital garden: writing kept in the open while it is still growing, rather than published finished and left alone. Pages are revisited and rewritten, and each one carries how far along it is.
- seedling — a rough thought, written down so it stops rattling around.
- budding — it has a shape and a claim, and the claim is arguable.
- evergreen — something I'd stand behind.
Nothing here is a finished position. A page dated last week may already disagree with one dated last month; when that happens, the newer page says so and links back.
Why it exists
This page is the intro paragraph for the whole site, and it is also where I keep myself honest. It is a living document: what I am about, and what this project is for, written down so I can point at it later and see whether I drifted. If nobody else ever reads it, it has still done its job.
The short version: I am thinking in public, on purpose, before the thinking is finished. Sometimes an idea almost hurts until you work on it. Those are the ones that end up here, usually as a seedling, usually before I can defend them properly. Writing a thing down is how I find out whether I actually believe it.
There is no audience yet, and that is deliberate for now. There is no cadence either — a schedule reintroduces the obligation that killed the last version of this. The goals I do have are plain: get the ideas out of my head, get better at the parts of the craft I am weakest at, and keep a record that a future me, or a machine reading on his behalf, can actually follow.
The guardrails, as principles
- Apolitical on religion, race, party and identity. Industries at scale are fair game.
- Arguments over feelings. A claim about the world needs evidence you can check, and that applies hardest to mine.
- The argument, never the person. No straw men, no dunking.
- Other people's privacy is not mine to spend, and nothing here is about anywhere I have worked.
- Everything is cited. Almost nothing is quoted at length.
The guardrails, as checkable rules
These are the ones a build can enforce. A rule worth stating is worth testing, so each of these is checked every time the site is built, and a page that breaks one does not reach it. The friction is deliberate: a false stop costs me a minute, a false pass is public.
- Working notes never ship. Every page is split in two and only the top half is built.
- Nothing publishes by default. Each page is opened deliberately, one step at a time.
- My private reading notes stay private. Prose cites the original work instead.
- No viewpoint, no page. A summary of someone else's work is not writing.
- The build scans its own output and fails rather than ship a leak.
AI disclosures
One was in the room for nearly all of it. Here is the part that matters, which is what it did not do.
- A human is the final judge. Every sentence here was written, read or edited by me — in most cases all three.
- Nothing goes up on its own. No page reaches the web until I open it, and a machine has never made that call.
- It argues, it does not decide. Claude pushes back, checks citations, line-edits, and suggests links and tags. The positions are mine to hold or drop.
- When it drafts, the page says so. If I set an angle and ask it to carry the prose, that page is marked and stays unpublished until I have read it back.
- Why bother with any of this. Language and context are what these systems run on, so a page with its sources attached and its uncertainty left visible is a better page for both kinds of reader.
How it's made
This is here because the how is part of the argument: the site is built the way the writing is, and both are meant to be inspectable. Where something can be made deterministic, it is — the same input gives the same page, and the guardrails above are verifiable rather than promised.
Built with Astro, hosted by Cloudflare. Colour and spacing come from a small token set of my own. The artifacts are small apps built in the same sessions as the writing. Corrections are welcome — mistakes get fixed in the open.
